Disabilities

The purpose of CHC’s Disabilities Committee is “to identify and eliminate barriers to quality, affordable health care for people with disabilities throughout life.” Each month, the Committee brings together people with all types of disabilities — physical, mental, sensory, developmental — family members, staff at disability-related organizations, and other disability advocates. The Disabilities Committee meets on the third Wednesday of the month from 3:00—4:30 p.m.

Members of the Disabilities Committee have decided to focus their time and energy on three advocacy priorities. Committee members have formed three smaller workgroups to focus on each advocacy priority:
  • Increase or safeguard public funding (i.e. Medical Assistance) for people with disabilities.
  • Assure the consideration of both physical and mental health issues in all health care.
  • Collaborate with and support other organizations in furthering home and community-based services.

Each workgroup focuses on making a difference in one of these three areas of focus. The workgroups meet monthly for an hour to work toward their goal. All workgroups then share their progress with the entire Disabilities Committee during regular meetings.

It’s never too late to join the Disabilities Committee or a workgroup! If you are interested please call Sally Jo at 412-456-1877×203 to sign up. All are welcome!
